hypnotic Suggestion, Autohypnosis and Autosuggestion " Theories of Hypnosis " A System of Brief Hypnoanalysis " and " Research in Hypnotism There is also a tolerably complete bibliography. It may be a matter of surprise to many analytical psychotherapists at the present day, who have assimilated the teachings of Freud and other leading exponents of deep mental analysis, that there could still be a public, and a need, for such a book as this. But, quite apart from the desirability or undesirability of the application of the method of hypnotism in modern psychotherapy, there continues to be an emphatic need for the adequate understanding of hypnosis, its laws, and its relation to kindred states of mind. No modern psychologist can afford to be ignorant of the subject, and no modern psychologist can evade the question of the normality or abnormality of the state of hypnosis or the justification of the use of hypnotism in special cases. As an exposition of almost all sides of the subject this book is excellent. Where it falls short is in an inadequate appreciation of the practical and medical (not the merely theoretical) differences of mild states of hypnosis

‘a Portion of Truth’: Demarcating the Boundaries of Scientific Hypnotism in Late Nineteenth-century France
In fin-de-siècle France, hypnotism enjoyed an unprecedented level of medico-scientific legitimacy. They did so by engaging in the rhetorical ac...

Georges Gilles de la Tourette started working with Charcot in 1884 and probably remained his most faithful student, even after his mentor's death in 1893. This collaboration was particularly intens...

In May 1892, Belgium adopted a law on the exercise of hypnotism. The signing of the law constituted a temporary endpoint to six years of debate on the dangers and promises of hypnotism, a process of negotiation between medical doctors, members of parliament, legal professionals and lay practitioners. The terms of the debate were not very different from what happened elsewhere in Europe, where, ...

Gilles de la Tourette is now known for the disease which now bears his name, but his activities in the management of hysterics and in hypnotism, which gained him most of his lifetime reputation, have been largely forgotten. As one of the closest followers of Jean-Martin Charcot, he always remained faithful to his mentor's views, and was one of the most vehement defenders of La Salpêtrière schoo...
